You might already have noticed it: the countdown timer for the CPCRetroDev 2016 on my page disappeared, so the deadline has passed and we can see how many entries we have this year. To make a long story short – 34 games are ready to be judged and while we have to wait for the final results and the downloads, you can have a look at the gameplay and the trailers for the games. Kevin Thacker released new version of his cross-platform development tools CPCXfs and 2CDT. With CPCXfs you can transfer files between DSK images, which can be used in an emulator or to transfer files to the real Amstrad CPC, and your local file system. 2CDT is a similar tool, which is used to transfer files from your local file system intro a CDT cassette image. This can also be used in an emulator or transfered to the real machine. Both utilities are widely used for cross-platform development, e.g. with CPCtelera, to prepare your release.
You can download CPCXfs and 2CDT from the CPCWiki forums or at the end of this news. The source code is included in the ZIP archives of the release.

Changelog CPCXfs

  • Fixed errors shown with static analysis
  • CPCXfs will correctly set ERRORLEVEL command-line variable under more error conditions
  • Some other smaller bugfixes

Changelog 2CDT

  • You can define the sync byte for headerless
  • Command-line processing under windows and linux has been re-written. It is a lot better.
  • If you uses the mode with 2 blocks and you gave it a file which was shorter than a block it would not write it correctly. Now fixed.
  • When using pure tone it didn’t write the length of the ‘1’ pulse correctly
  • Some issues seen when running static analysis over the code.

Prodatron released a new work in progress (WIP) version of his SymbOS, which is a multi-tasking cross-platform operating system for Zilog Z80 based computers like the Amstrad CPC, the Amstrad PCW or the MSX machines. This time, it contains the long awaited network support for the Amstrad CPC (well… there was no network hardware available for the last release) and also support for an USB mouse. To use those new features, you will need the Amstrad M4 Wifi expansion for the network support or the USB Albireo board.
On the software side, SymbOS comes with several network related programs, where the most important ones are an IRC chat client, which you can use to directly talk to other Amstrad CPC users on the #CPC channel at Freenode, and the telnet client. Prodatron also improved the SymbOS desktop. You can add unlimited start menu entries and desktop widgets to it now. To unpack your compressed ZIP files, you can use the new unzip tool in the SymShell console in the WIP, too.

If you want to test the latest WIP by yourself, you can download and discuss it on the CPCWiki forums.

CargoSoft, well-known for the awesome Orion Prime horror sci-fi adventure, released a new game called “Imperial Mahjong”. You might already have guessed it: it is a mahjong game for the Amstrad CPC. This all sounds well-known and simple, but it isn’t: it features two new graphics modes (EGX – 16 colours, 320×200 instead of 4 colours, EGX2 – 4 colours in 640×200 instead of 2 colours). During the whole game, you can hear digi drums and the game itself features more than 30 minutes of music! Play the game and find out much more features in it. And… it looks soooooo beautiful :-)!

Imperial Mahjong

To play the game, you need at least 128kb RAM. You can download it at the end of the news or from the CargoSoft Imperial Mahjong homepage.
